Last week in Spanish III students began a new unit about the future and finding a career. In the photos below, they are discussing (for 15+ minutes!!) the information they found after interviewing friends and family members about their professions. Students presented information to their group members and group members had to ask questions of that student to find out more about the job mentioned. By the end of the task, students were asking genuine questions of their peers about information that interested them. They were creating language and asking/answering real, on-the-spot questions WITHOUT using English. Way to go!
Día de los Muertos is such a fun, but crazy, time of year in our Spanish classrooms. All classes have the opportunity to bake Pan de Muerto (dead bread) for some extra credit and bring it in to share with their classmates. Most of the time it turns out well and students really enjoy the yummy treat!
This year in Spanish IB we continued our tradition of creating Sugar Skulls in class. In Spanish 3, students choose a topic related to the holiday and create a short, formal presentation to teach their classmates about it. In Spanish 3, 4, and 5-AP, students create a class ofrenda, which allows them to really get into what it might be like to celebrate this holiday in Mexico. We hold a competition after school where teachers from our building come down to vote on the ofrendas, crowning the winning class as the Ofrenda Champions. The kids really get into it and the ofrendas are usually quite impressive! Level 3 has to choose someone famous that has died in the past year, level 4 has to choose someone who is Spanish-speaking, and level 5-AP can choose anyone! The kids actually get so "into it" that some of them begin planning during the summer! |
